In past relationships, getting my ex back has consumed me. I have allowed this to happen on more than one occasion. The story was typically the same. They were no longer interested, and I took it upon myself to prove to them that I could become whatever it was they needed me to be. I would change my hair, clothing, and interests in an attempt to make them want me back. It almost never, ever worked. Through the years I have learned a few very important lessons about life as well as relationships that will hopefully stick with me, and that I can hopefully share with others so that they do not have to learn the hard way, like I did.

When I finally grew weary of the dog and pony show of working so hard at getting my ex back, I had to ask myself why I was doing it. The answer, when I honestly considered the question, astounded me. I did not really want that person so badly, rather, I wanted them to want me. I wanted to be wanted. I had always found someone else, proving that none of the past relationships that I had stressed over were meant to be.

My adventures in getting my ex back also taught me that if someone got back with me because I changed something major about myself that I did not really want to change, they were not really with me and they did not really want me. They wanted whoever it was that I had turned into, and if that person what not someone I wanted to be, the whole thing was pointless. There are things I can change and things I cannot, but if anything I change makes me unhappy, it is not worth it. I wanted to be loved for who and what I already am.

Lastly, I learned that getting my ex back only worked if I was the reason they left. It had to be something about me that I could change before the effort could have any result. If they left for something other than me, then I had no control over the situation.

I can change my attitude, my looks, and my ways, but I cannot change into the girl he met at the grocery store that he likes better, or make him interested in a relationship if he is not right now. Once I accepted this, my life became much simpler and I am now better able to move on when a relationship ends.
